When are off-peak hours?
If you want to use the NS off-peak benefit, the entire train trip must take place during off-peak hours. The ticket is invalid outside off-peak hours.
Off-peak hours are on weekdays:
- From 00:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.
- From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- From 6:30 p.m. to midnight
During weekends and national holidays, you can travel all day with off-peak discount.
How do I check in and out with Gaiyo?
At a train station with entrance gates, you get the ticket past the reader (see photo below).
- Open the app and pull out your e-ticket. Make sure your phone's brightness is high so your ticket is clearly visible.
- Hold your ticket against the glass window. If successful, the entrance gates will open. If not successful, see an NS employee for assistance.
At stations without entrance gates, you do not have to check in, but show your ticket to the conductor when you are checked.
Tip: Should the gate not open by scanning your e-ticket, turn off the NFC on your smartphone (only possible on Android phones) and try again, keeping your smartphone at some distance from the scanner. (NFC can be found in the "settings" of your smartphone under "connections").
How do I get my ticket?
If you purchased a train ticket through Gaiyo, your e-ticket will appear directly in the app after purchase.
How do I buy an e-ticket for the train through Gaiyo?
It is possible to purchase an e-ticket for the train through Gaiyo. Follow the following steps to purchase a ticket.
1. At the top of the dashboard, enter your destination under 'Current location' and scroll to the 'Tickets for public transportation' widget
2. Find an NS logo and your destination in the list, then click on 'Tickets'
3. At the top, enter your departure and arrival location and indicate when (day) the ticket should be valid.
4. You will now see the ticket available according to your route. Note: The ticket shown is by default a one-way 2nd class ticket. If you want to change this to a return ticket or with valley discount, click the pencil icon and then click "Ok".
5. Click " Confirm selected" to order your ticket.
6. Check your ticket and click "Confirm."
7. Your ticket has now been purchased. You can view your purchased e-ticket via "Tickets and Reservations" by clicking on the three horizontal bars at the top of your dashboard.
