Can I travel on ICE trains?

1. Can I travel on ICE trains with my Gaiyo card or e-ticket?

Yes, you can. You can use ICE trains within the Netherlands without paying a surcharge.

2. On which routes can I travel without paying a surcharge?

  • Amsterdam – Utrecht – Arnhem (ICE towards Germany).
  • Utrecht – Arnhem – Oberhausen (only the Dutch section is surcharge-free).

Domestic travelers can therefore board and alight at Dutch ICE stations at no extra cost.

3. Is a surcharge or reservation required for international travel?

Yes. If you are traveling with the ICE across the border to Germany, the following applies:

  • An international ticket (available from NS International or the Gaiyo App, among others).
  • Possibly a surcharge or reservation, depending on the type of ticket and destination.

4. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

  • Make sure you always check in and out correctly with your Gaiyo card when traveling within the Netherlands.
  • For international travel: purchase a valid ticket before departure; reservations are recommended because ICE trains are often busy.

In short: you can travel on the ICE without a surcharge within the Netherlands. For international travel, you will need a separate ticket (and sometimes a reservation).
